JAKSU Elections Scheduled at Jagannath University

Published: 05 Jan 2026, 02:10 pm

Tomorrow, Tuesday, 6 January, marks the long-awaited election day for the Central Students’ Council (JAKSU) at Jagannath University (JU). The university’s highest decision-making body, the Syndicate, formally confirmed the date at a meeting held on Sunday at 3:00 pm. Syndicate member Professor Dr Mohammad Bilal Hossain announced the decision, emphasising the institution’s commitment to a secure and orderly voting process.

Professor Bilal Hossain stated, “All Syndicate members have agreed on the arrangements for the election and security measures. Additional police personnel will be deployed across polling centres. A control room has been established at Bahadur Shah Park to monitor the overall environment and campus security throughout the election day.”

In the days leading up to the election, candidates from various panels, along with independent contenders, staged protests in front of the administrative building’s main gate. They alleged attempts to obstruct the electoral process. Despite these tensions, all candidates expressed optimism for a peaceful, transparent, and fair election that will select genuine student representatives.

Candidates have noted that their campaigns, based on direct engagement with students, have been met with positive feedback.

Students themselves are hopeful for a smooth voting process. Hasan Mia from the Mathematics Department remarked, “This is my first election. I hope there will be no irregularities.” Another student, Sahed Sijan, added, “Every election faces challenges, but I anticipate a peaceful voting day this time.”

Professor Dr Mostafa Hasan, Chief Election Commissioner, confirmed that on 5 and 6 January, all teachers, officials, and administrative staff will be on duty. Vehicles of staff and faculty will be entirely barred from campus on election day to prevent any disruption.

Originally scheduled for 30 December, the election had been postponed due to the passing of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. Following students’ demands and an urgent Syndicate meeting, the date was rescheduled to 6 January, ensuring that students can exercise their democratic rights.

With comprehensive security arrangements, active student participation, and engaged candidates, JU anticipates a credible and transparent JAKSU election, setting the tone for future student governance.
