Lieutenant General (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Adviser to the Ministry of Home Affairs, has announced that 114 bodies interred in a mass grave at Rayerbazar, believed to be victims of the July Movement, will be exhumed.

He made this statement on the morning of Saturday, 2 August, following a visit to the Rayerbazar cemetery, where he offered respects at the mass grave of those killed during the July Movement.

The adviser stated:

Commitment to Justice

Jahangir Alam Chowdhury also affirmed that those responsible for the mass burial would be brought to justice:

“Those who created the mass grave will be brought under the purview of justice.”

Remarks on Law and Order: Alleged Secret Meetings by Awami League

Later the same day, during a visit to Mohammadpur Police Station, the Home Affairs Adviser commented on alleged secret meetings being held by the banned political party, the Awami League. He said:

“Clandestine meetings by the banned organisation Awami League will not be allowed to disrupt law and order. Any attempt at sabotage will be met with firm resistance. No one involved in conspiracies—whether civilians or members of the law enforcement—will be spared.”

Warning Against Destabilisation Attempts

He further warned against any effort by any force to destabilise the country:

“Whoever attempts to destabilise the country, regardless of which force they belong to, will be dealt with accordingly.”

The Home Affairs Adviser’s statements signal a strong stance by the administration against political subversion, while offering a path to closure for families of victims of the July Movement through exhumation and dignified reburial.
