At least sixteen people have tragically lost their lives in a horrific bus accident on the Indonesian island of Java, officials confirmed on Monday. The incident occurred shortly after midnight local time, leaving the nation in shock.
According to Budi Ariono, head of the local search and rescue team, the passenger bus, carrying 34 individuals, lost control while negotiating a bend on the Krapyak toll road near the city of Semarang. The vehicle crashed into a concrete barrier before tipping over onto its side. The bus was en route from the capital, Jakarta, to the historic city of Yogyakarta at the time of the accident.
“The impact was severe, and many passengers inside the bus suffered critical injuries,” Budi Ariono stated. Emergency services, including police and rescue teams, arrived at the scene around 40 minutes later, initially recovering six bodies at the site. A further ten victims succumbed to their injuries en route to, or at, nearby hospitals.
A total of 18 passengers were taken to two local hospitals with varying degrees of injuries. Five remain in critical condition, while thirteen are classified as seriously injured. Television footage showed the yellow bus lying overturned, as rescue personnel, police officers, and bystanders worked together to transfer the injured and deceased into ambulances.
Eyewitnesses reported that the bus was travelling at high speed when the driver lost control. Chief of Police Rebut Hari Wibowo, speaking from Dr. Kariadi General Hospital in Semarang, said the driver, though severely injured, was able to communicate during treatment. Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash and are expected to question the driver further as part of their inquiry.
The accident highlights ongoing concerns about road safety in Indonesia, particularly on heavily trafficked toll roads where high-speed travel and sharp bends increase the risk of serious accidents. Local officials have urged drivers to exercise caution, especially during night travel, and pledged to intensify safety checks on passenger buses.
As investigations continue, families of the victims have begun receiving assistance, while authorities work to determine whether vehicle malfunction, road conditions, or driver error contributed to the tragedy.
