Police have taken a man named Rinku into custody after he allegedly attacked two young women at a tea stall in Dhaka’s Lalmatia area. The incident, which took place on March 1, reportedly escalated over the women smoking.
According to police, Rinku was detained from Lalmatia on Sunday night for questioning. However, authorities clarified that he has not been formally arrested.
On Monday Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki addressed the incident in a Facebook post. “The harasser from Lalmatia, Rinku, was arrested last night,” he wrote.
On March 1, two young women were attacked in Lalmatia. One of the victims said that the attack happened because they were smoking cigarettes.
The incident sparked widespread outrage on social media, leading to calls for action against the perpetrator.
