25,871 Recruited Across Security Forces Ahead of 13th National Elections

The Adviser to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, has confirmed that a total of 25,871 individuals have been newly recruited into various law enforcement and security agencies ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Elections.

The announcement came on Monday, 18 August, during a press briefing at the Secretariat following a meeting of the Core Committee on Law and Order.

The Home Affairs Adviser detailed the allocation of recruits across the different security forces:

Security Force / Department Number of Recruits
Bangladesh Police 15,851
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) 4,469
Department of Prisons 1,558
Fire Service and Civil Defence 204
Total 25,871

He further explained that the appointments consist of both newly created posts and the filling of vacant positions. Within the police, the recruitment covers positions from Sub-Inspector to Constable, while both the Ansar and BGB have seen new appointments at the constable level.

In response to questions regarding the arrest of My TV Chairman Nasir Uddin Sathi—against whom the complainant himself reportedly denied any involvement—the Adviser remarked: “You should ask the court in this matter. If the arrest by police is unlawful, the court will release him. The judiciary is independent.”

Addressing concerns about public security, Jahangir Alam Chowdhury assured that the government is determined to prevent harassment of innocent citizens: “We want to ensure that ordinary, innocent people are not harassed in any way. The guilty will not be spared under any circumstances.”

He also criticised the tendency to overlook minor offenders while sparing influential figures: “We always catch the small fry, but the big ones manage to escape. This time, a big one has been caught, and now everyone is chasing after him. Nobody seems to be speaking about the small fry. If an innocent person, even a small one, is wrongfully caught, you should highlight it. Thank you for always reporting the truth.”
