A serious security breach occurred at the Shri Shri Mahadev Ashram and Kali Temple in Nimtali, Badda, Dhaka, where 30 rounds of ammunition along with other items belonging to the on-duty police force were stolen. Following the incident, seven police officers, including one Sub-Inspector (SI), one Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), and five constables, have been temporarily suspended, while the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Badda Police Station, Md. Saiful Islam, has been withdrawn from his post.
The incident was confirmed by multiple sources within the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Tuesday, 30 September.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Gulshan Division, Md. Tarek Mahmud, told Dhaka Post: “Due to negligence in duty, SI Mobashir, an ASI, and five constables of Badda Police Station have been temporarily suspended. In the same incident, OC Md. Saiful Islam has been withdrawn.”
Sources from Gulshan Division Police and the DMP Headquarters revealed that the on-duty police personnel had been stationed in a two-storey under-construction building within the temple boundary of the Mahadev Ashram and Kali Temple.
The theft occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, between approximately 4:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m., while four police personnel and three Ansar members were asleep. The thieves stole:
One of the stolen bags contained 30 rounds of shotgun ammunition.
At around 9:45 a.m., the bags were recovered from a nearby vacant area adjacent to the police pavilion. All the ammunition was retrieved intact, and three individuals were taken to the police station for questioning.
DC Tarek Mahmud confirmed: “The stolen items and ammunition from the on-duty police force at Shri Shri Mahadev Ashram and Kali Temple have been recovered. However, this incident clearly points to negligence in duty. Appropriate actions have been taken against all involved.”
