32 Cuban Soldiers Killed in US Operation in Venezuela

In a highly controversial operation carried out in Venezuela, thirty-two Cuban soldiers were reportedly killed while attempting to secure Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife. The announcement was made on Sunday, 4 January, by the Venezuelan government.

The Cuban government confirmed that in honour of the fallen personnel, a two-day state mourning period will be observed on 5 and 6 January. During this time, national flags will fly at half-mast, followed by formal funeral ceremonies and burial arrangements.

According to Venezuela’s state news agency, Prensa Latina, the deceased Cuban “soldiers” were deployed at the request of the Venezuelan government and were acting in support of Venezuela’s military forces. Reports indicate that the fatalities occurred either during direct armed engagement with the attackers or as a result of bombings at military facilities. The agency emphasised that the soldiers died after mounting strong resistance.

Cuba, a long-standing ally of Maduro, has historically provided military and law enforcement support to Venezuela, sending personnel to assist in maintaining internal security and defending the government.

Following the US operation, President Maduro and his wife were reportedly transported to New York, where they face prosecution on charges related to drug trafficking. The 63-year-old Venezuelan leader is expected to appear today at Manhattan’s federal court. Maduro, however, has consistently denied all allegations of wrongdoing.

The release of images showing Maduro blindfolded and handcuffed by US forces has sparked widespread outrage across Venezuela. In response, Defence Minister General Vladimir Padrino stated on national television that the US attack resulted in the brutal deaths of a significant portion of Venezuelan military personnel, civilians, and members of the presidential security detail. He added that the Venezuelan Armed Forces have been placed on the highest state of alert to safeguard the country’s sovereignty.
