The countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup has entered its most dramatic phase. With the tournament set to feature a historic 48-team format for the first time, the list of confirmed participants has now reached 32. The latest nation to secure their place is Norway, who stunned the footballing world by thrashing Italy 4–1 in a decisive qualifying match held last night. Their qualification marks a return to the grandest stage of world football after a long wait of 28 years.
Remarkably, Norway last played in the 1998 World Cup—the very first edition to feature a 32-team format. Their qualification in the expanded 48-team tournament adds a poetic twist to their footballing journey. Led by superstar Erling Haaland, Norway’s resurgence has added a new layer of excitement to the European qualifiers.
Yet the race is far from over. Sixteen more teams are still in contention, and the coming days will determine who earns direct qualification and who must survive the pressure-filled play-offs. The full and final draw will take place on 5 December in Washington, United States, where the official groups will be revealed.
The three host nations—Canada, Mexico, and the United States—had their places assured without participating in the qualifiers. Several strong teams from Asia, Africa, South America, and Oceania have also booked their tickets, leaving Europe, CONCACAF, and the intercontinental play-off battles as the remaining theatres of uncertainty.
South America witnessed its usual drama. Defending champions Argentina were the first to qualify, followed by five-time champions Brazil after a tense campaign. Uruguay, Ecuador, Paraguay, and Colombia completed the region’s list, while Bolivia remain alive through the play-offs.
Europe, the most competitive zone, has so far confirmed five teams: England, Portugal, Croatia, France and the newly-qualified Norway. Heavyweights such as Spain, Germany and Belgium stand on firm ground and are almost certain to qualify, while Italy now face the daunting play-off route.
Africa’s qualification sprint has already finalised nine nations—Algeria, South Africa, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Ghana, Morocco, Tunisia, and Senegal. Congo have earned a place in the intercontinental play-offs.
Asia has confirmed eight nations: Saudi Arabia, Qatar, South Korea, Iran, Japan, Jordan, Australia, and Uzbekistan. The United Arab Emirates and Iraq remain in contention through the play-offs. Oceania’s sole confirmed representative is New Zealand.
| Continent/Region | Qualified Teams | Additional Information |

With 32 nations confirmed and 16 more yet to join, the global football community now waits eagerly as the final entrants prepare to fight for their place in the world’s greatest sporting spectacle.
