33 Fishermen Arrested with 30 Lakh Metres of Illegal Nets in Hatia

The Bangladesh Coast Guard has successfully apprehended 33 fishermen along with 30 lakh metres of illegal current nets from the Meghna River in the Hatia Upazila of the Noakhali District. The operation, aimed at curbing illegal fishing activities, resulted in the seizure of the illegal nets and the arrest of the fishermen involved.

The operation was confirmed by Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haq, Media Officer of the Bangladesh Coast Guard, on Tuesday morning.

A Coordinated Operation to Combat Illegal Fishing

According to Lt. Commander Siam-ul-Haq, the Bangladesh Coast Guard regularly conducts operations to prevent illegal fishing within the country’s inland and maritime waters. These efforts are designed to safeguard fish populations and promote sustainable fishing practices, ensuring the long-term health of aquatic ecosystems.

On Monday evening, a Coast Guard team from the Hatia Coast Guard Station launched a special operation based on credible intelligence. The targeted operation took place in the Chairman Ghat area of the Meghna River, a known hotspot for illegal fishing activity.

Large-Scale Operation

During the operation, the team seized two fishing boats equipped with 30 lakh metres of illegal current nets. The total value of the confiscated equipment is estimated at approximately Taka 10 crore. These illegal nets, used for indiscriminate fishing, can cause significant damage to aquatic life by capturing fish of all sizes, including juveniles, thereby threatening the sustainability of fish populations.

The arrested fishermen were taken into custody, and the nets were destroyed by burning in the presence of the Upazila Fisheries Officer as part of the official procedure.

The Role of the Coast Guard in Protecting Marine Ecosystems

The operation is part of a broader initiative by the Bangladesh Coast Guard to protect the nation’s waterways and marine ecosystems. The force has ramped up efforts to combat illegal fishing, which not only depletes fish stocks but also damages the aquatic environment.

Fishing with illegal current nets, also known as electro-fishing, is a major concern in many parts of Bangladesh, including the Meghna River, due to its harmful impact on aquatic biodiversity. This method of fishing uses electric currents to stun fish, making them easier to catch, but it also kills or severely injures non-target species and damages the riverbed.

Ensuring Sustainable Fishing Practices

The Coast Guard’s continuous operations play a critical role in maintaining the balance between sustainable fishing practices and preserving the livelihoods of genuine fishermen. These efforts are vital in ensuring that Bangladesh’s fish stocks remain healthy and plentiful for future generations.

With regular patrols and targeted operations, the Bangladesh Coast Guard remains committed to tackling illegal fishing, which remains a persistent challenge in the nation’s vast network of rivers and coastal waters. The authorities have warned that any attempts to violate fishing regulations will be met with strict legal action to protect both the marine environment and the legitimate fishing community.
