5.6-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Off Indonesia’s Maluku Province, No Tsunami Risk

JAKARTA, March 3, 2025 (BSS/XINHUA) – A 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck off the eastern Maluku province of Indonesia early on Monday, though it did not lead to any tsunami threat, according to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency.

The earthquake occurred at 01:42 a.m. local time, with its epicenter located 63 kilometres southeast of Maluku Tengah Regency, at a depth of 10 kilometres.

“There has been no significant impact from the tremor, and there have been no reports of serious damage or casualties,” said Sandhy Luhulima, a senior official at the emergency unit of the provincial disaster management agency, in an interview with Xinhua.

Indonesia, an archipelagic nation with 127 active volcanoes, is frequently subjected to earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for its high level of tectonic activity.

Context:

Indonesia’s geographic location along the Ring of Fire makes it particularly vulnerable to seismic activity, including earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Earthquakes in the region often cause widespread concern, although many smaller tremors like this one do not result in major damage. The Indonesian government and local authorities have established a variety of preparedness and response systems to mitigate the effects of such events, though the country continues to remain on high alert due to its exposure to natural hazards.
