A 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck an island off the coast of Sumatra in western Indonesia at 11:56 am on Thursday. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the incident. So far, there are no reports of damage or tsunami warnings.
USGS stated that the earthquake occurred 25 kilometres deep on Simeulue Island.
Following the event, the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning Centre confirmed that there is no threat of a tsunami.
Indonesia’s Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics recorded the earthquake at a magnitude of 6.3 and a depth of 10 kilometres. The agency stated that there is no likelihood of a tsunami being triggered by this tremor.
The vast archipelago of Southeast Asia, Indonesia, frequently experiences earthquakes as it is located along the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’.
In this active geological region, tectonic plate collisions often result in significant earthquakes.
