₹7 Million Movie, ₹750 Million History—The Film That Earned 100 Times Its Budget

To the average viewer, a film is deemed successful simply if it is a “hit.” Nowadays, the terms superhit and blockbuster are often casually used. However, the entertainment industry applies specific benchmarks to these labels.

A movie that earns double its production cost is considered a superhit. If it earns significantly more, it may be labelled a blockbuster. But earning five times its budget or more is rare.

What, then, do we call a film that earned over one hundred times its budget and ran in theatres for more than a year consecutively? This is the story of ‘Mungaru Male’, India’s most profitable film.

In 2006, writer-director Yogaraj Bhat produced the romantic drama Mungaru Male. Featuring newcomers Ganesh and Pooja Gandhi, alongside the experienced Anant Nag, the Kannada film was made on a modest budget of just ₹7 million.

Upon its release in December, the film gradually gained popularity, with celebrations such as the Golden Jubilee being observed at multiple locations. At PVR Multiplex in Bengaluru, the film ran continuously for 460 days, setting an unprecedented record.

It became the first Kannada film to earn ₹500 million worldwide, ultimately grossing ₹750 million, with ₹570 million of that coming from Karnataka alone. The film was recognised in the state as an industry hit.

At the time of release, Ganesh and Pooja Gandhi were relatively unknown. The phenomenal success of Mungaru Male catapulted them to stardom overnight. Over the following years, they starred in multiple hit films, becoming some of the most recognisable faces in Kannada cinema.

For producer K. Krishna, the success came with a bitter side. The Income Tax Department claimed that the film had a net income of ₹675 million and demanded tax accordingly, even conducting raids at the producer’s residence.

Mungaru Male’s box office record remained unbroken for over a decade until ‘KGF Chapter 1’ surpassed it. The film was later remade in Telugu, Bengali, Odia, and Marathi, and in 2016, a spiritual sequel, ‘Mungaru Male 2’, was released. Recently, the original film was also released on OTT platforms, expanding its popularity even further.
