In a profound gesture of compassion, the late Pope Francis donated one of his iconic popemobiles to be repurposed into a mobile clinic for children in Gaza, Catholic charity Caritas announced on Monday.

Originally used during Pope Francis’s 2014 visit to Bethlehem, the open-sided Mitsubishi vehicle – designed to allow the pontiff to greet the faithful – had since been in storage. Recently, it has been restored and refurbished to serve a more critical function: delivering frontline healthcare to Gaza’s war-affected and malnourished children.

Humanitarian Mission

“With the vehicle, we will be able to reach children who today have no access to healthcare — children who are injured and malnourished,”
Peter Brune, Secretary General, Caritas Sweden

The initiative came after Cardinal Anders Arborelius of Sweden petitioned Pope Francis to donate the unused vehicle for this humanitarian mission. The converted vehicle will be staffed with a team of doctors and a designated driver, and fitted with essential medical equipment including a refrigerator for storing medicines.

“This vehicle represents the love, care and closeness shown by His Holiness for the most vulnerable, which he expressed throughout the crisis,”
Anton Asfar, Secretary General, Caritas Jerusalem

Context: Ongoing Crisis in Gaza

The mobile clinic’s deployment hinges on the opening of a humanitarian corridor, currently uncertain due to renewed military activity. Israel resumed major operations in Gaza on 18 March 2025, after a two-month ceasefire ended, amidst political uncertainty on both sides.

Timeline of the Conflict Event
7 October 2023 Hamas launches attack on Israel: 1,218 people killed (mostly civilians)
18 March 2025 Israel resumes military campaign in Gaza
5 May 2025 (latest update) Israel’s cabinet approves further expansion of military operations
Gaza Death Toll Since 18 March 2,436 (according to Gaza’s Health Ministry)
Total Gaza Death Toll Since Oct 52,535 (as reported by Hamas-run health authorities)

While no definite timeline is available for when the popemobile-turned-clinic can begin its mission, Caritas remains hopeful. The vehicle now stands as both a symbol of peace and service, echoing Pope Francis’s enduring message of solidarity with the suffering.
