Those Expressing Doubts About Elections Are Not Supporters of Democracy: Salahuddin

Salahuddin Ahmed, a Standing Committee member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has said that those expressing apprehension about the upcoming February elections are not, in reality, supporters of democracy.

On Saturday (16 August), while addressing a special prayer gathering (Doa Mahfil) held at the BNP’s central office in Nayapaltan, Dhaka, he remarked: “Those who, through various statements, cast doubts about the elections are not defenders of democracy, nor are they allies of the people of Bangladesh. For one reason or another, they are twisting their words in order to delay, obstruct, or even prevent the election from taking place.”

The gathering was organised by the Jubo Dal (BNP’s youth wing) to mark the birthday of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, where Salahuddin attended as the chief guest.

Salahuddin emphasised that the people of Bangladesh remain united and resolute in their pursuit of democracy and voting rights:

  • Citizens are firmly committed to upholding democratic values
  • Any attempt to create obstacles through false arguments will be resisted
  • The nation stands prepared to overcome all hurdles to safeguard the democratic journey

He expressed confidence that Bangladeshis are determined to continue their struggle for democratic transition and will not be deterred by adversities.

Call for Political Solidarity

In his address, Salahuddin urged all political parties and groups to demonstrate the same unity they once showed during the struggle against fascism: “Let us remain united, engage in dialogue, and ensure a free and peaceful election. Through this unity, we can facilitate Bangladesh’s democratic progression.”

The BNP leader underlined that the entire nation is eagerly waiting for a fair and peaceful election:

  • The people seek the democracy for which martyrs sacrificed their lives, endured injuries, blindness, and lifelong struggles
  • After 16–17 years of democratic movements, the nation aspires to finally achieve the democracy it has long fought for

Salahuddin stressed that national unity is vital for rebuilding democracy as a powerful and equitable state system.
