In a notable incident during local voting in Chuadanga, law enforcement authorities apprehended a Jamaat leader for allegedly possessing a large sum of cash near a polling station. Sharif Jisan, 46, the ward Amir of Jamaat in Ward 9 of Chuadanga Municipality, was detained outside the Rizia Khatun Probati Primary School polling centre with 79,000 Taka in his possession. He was subsequently taken into police custody in the presence of an executive magistrate.
According to local sources, the incident occurred during active voting hours when members of the public noticed Mr Jisan carrying a substantial amount of cash within the polling premises. Concerned citizens promptly informed the election officials, who then seized the 79,000 Taka from him. The suspect was handed over to the executive magistrate, who was present at the scene.
The executive magistrate reviewed the situation immediately and authorised the police to take Mr Jisan into custody for further investigation. The swift action highlighted the vigilance of both the electoral authorities and the local population in maintaining the integrity of the voting process.
BM Tarik Uz Zaman, Additional District Magistrate of Chuadanga, confirmed the arrest, stating, “He has been handed over to the local police station. Legal proceedings are currently underway, and we are ensuring that the matter is handled according to the law.”
This incident underscores ongoing concerns regarding electoral malpractices, particularly the alleged use of cash to influence voters. Authorities have repeatedly warned that possession of unaccounted cash near polling centres is a serious offence under Bangladesh’s electoral laws, carrying significant legal consequences.
