In a remarkable display in the UEFA Champions League, Norway’s Bodo/Glimt produced yet another shock by defeating Serie A leaders Inter Milan 3-1 in the first leg of the play-off round. Danish forward Kasper Høgh was the hero for the Norwegian side, contributing two assists and scoring a goal himself to steer his team to a commanding advantage.
This victory marks only the second time a Norwegian club has defeated an Italian side in European competition. The previous occasion was in 1996 when Rosenborg triumphed over AC Milan.
Bodo/Glimt took the lead in the 20th minute at home. A brilliant backheel pass from Høgh set up Sondre Brunstad Fet, who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.
Inter Milan responded ten minutes later, with Pio Esposito, aged 20, capitalising on a through ball from Carlos Augusto to score. This made Esposito the youngest Italian to score for Inter in a knockout-stage European match.
After the break, Inter showed signs of momentum. Lautaro Martínez struck the post with a powerful attempt, and Augusto tested goalkeeper Nikita Haikin from long range. However, the match soon swung decisively in Bodo/Glimt’s favour.
In the 61st minute, a defensive lapse allowed Jens Petter Hauge to receive the ball, and he lifted it over the goalkeeper to score.
Three minutes later, Ole Didrik Blomberg delivered a perfect cross for Høgh to score from close range, marking his fourth goal of the Champions League season.
Bodo/Glimt’s “soaring journey” this season continues unabated. They had already secured a place in the play-offs with victories over Manchester City (3-1) and Atlético Madrid (2-1) during the group stage, leaving the Norwegian side brimming with confidence.
Yet, coach Kjetil Knutsen admitted he was not entirely satisfied. Speaking to TV2, he said, “We did not play our best today. We were not clear in possession or in expressing our identity. But we scored some extraordinary goals—that made the difference.”
For Inter, there is still hope as the return leg remains. Coach Christian Schivur’s players are aiming to overturn the deficit at home next Tuesday. Midfielder Petar Sučić commented, “It was a tough night for us, but we have faith we can win at home.”
Elsewhere in the Champions League play-offs, Leverkusen defeated Olympiacos 2-0 on the same day, continuing their pursuit of the group stage.
