Home Affairs Adviser and retired Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has assured that the law enforcement agencies are fully prepared to ensure a smooth and fair election. At the same time, he warned that a political party is attempting to obstruct the electoral process.
He made these remarks on Sunday, 31 August, after a meeting of the Law and Order Core Committee.
“The party with no real activity obviously does not want the election to happen. Preventing this is the responsibility of political parties, the public, and everyone involved. Efforts are being made to ensure that no one can obstruct the election in any way,” he said.
He emphasised the importance of law and order, security, and active participation: “The extent to which the elections are free, fair, and impartial depends on the participating parties. Law enforcement agencies will provide full support to maintain security and law and order. We are fully prepared. The free and voluntary participation of the public is also crucial. Political parties must ensure this. With everyone’s cooperation, the caretaker government will be able to deliver a free, peaceful, and festive election,” Chowdhury stated.
“Political parties must maintain the unity they had after the government stepped down. One political party is trying to disrupt the election, and this must be countered. Some elements still remain active,” he added.
He also addressed recent incidents of obstruction and unrest in Dhaka and surrounding areas:
| Incident | Details |
| Road Blockades | 1,604 blockades reported, organised by 123 different groups, causing severe traffic congestion and public inconvenience |
| Fire at National Party Office | Incident controlled by police; Lt. Gen. Chowdhury noted that some critics claim the police acted excessively, but the situation was managed |
He reiterated that designated areas exist for protests or demands, but many groups have illegally occupied roads, increasing public hardship.
