A local government representative tragically lost his life after reportedly falling prey to a so-called “knockout” scam while travelling on a bus from Kushtia to Daulatdia in Rajbari district. The victim, identified as Ranju Kha, a member of the Union Parishad (UP) from Ward No. 2 of Habaspur Union, fell seriously ill mid-journey and subsequently died despite medical intervention.
According to police sources, the incident occurred on Saturday morning at approximately 8:30 a.m. Mr Kha boarded a local bus at the Chourhas More area in Kushtia, heading towards Daulatdia Ghat. Passengers on the bus noticed that he suddenly became unwell. Acting swiftly, they took him to the Goalanda Upazila Health Complex for urgent treatment.
Medical staff at the health complex initiated immediate care. However, despite their efforts, his condition deteriorated rapidly, and he passed away shortly after arrival.
Doctors have speculated that the cause of Mr Kha’s sudden illness may have been linked to the notorious “knockout” criminal gangs. These gangs are known to surreptitiously administer sedatives or anaesthetic substances to victims with the intent of robbery, leaving them incapacitated.
Confirming the case, Inspector (Investigation) Md. Rashidul Islam of Goalanda Police Station stated, “We are treating this incident with utmost seriousness. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether this was indeed the work of a knockout gang.”
The police have urged witnesses or anyone with information about suspicious activities on the Kushtia–Daulatdia bus route to come forward to assist in the investigation.
