A warning for the new coach: failure will not be tolerated

The formidable challenge of managing a club like Real Madrid has once again been underscored in recent days. The expectations are immense, the scrutiny relentless, and the balance between results on the pitch and harmony in the dressing room crucial. Fail in any of these areas, and the consequences are swift and unforgiving. Javier Alonso, who spent just seven months in the Santiago Bernabéu dugout, experienced this harsh reality firsthand before joining the list of coaches deemed unsuccessful.

Now, the responsibility falls upon Álvaro Arbeloa, who has been promoted from Real Madrid’s B team to take the reins of the first team.

Arbeloa addressed the media yesterday in a press conference as the club’s new head coach, outlining his plans and acknowledging the shadow left by his predecessor. The former Real Madrid defender spoke candidly about his tactical intentions, particularly how he plans to deploy key attackers such as Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé, signalling a blend of pragmatism and creativity in his approach.

Observers have noted strong parallels between Arbeloa and José Mourinho, the outspoken former Real coach. Like Mourinho, Arbeloa is direct in his communication and unafraid to speak his mind. In 2017, he himself described, “I am certainly a Mourinhoista,” highlighting his admiration for Mourinho’s coaching philosophy — a belief in executing one’s work boldly and without fear. Arbeloa spent three seasons under Mourinho at Real, participating in 237 matches and learning from the Portuguese manager’s intense, disciplined style.

Despite this influence, Arbeloa insists he will chart his own course. “I never speak to Mourinho about my coaching now, but working under him was an honour that profoundly shaped me. I will coach as Álvaro Arbeloa, without fear of failure. Trying to become Mourinho would be catastrophic,” the 42-year-old said, stressing his intention to integrate lessons from multiple mentors. “I’ve worked with many coaches throughout my career. All have left an important imprint. Many are legends who have won everything — I hope to achieve even a fraction of what they have.”

Arbeloa has spent the past six years nurturing Real Madrid’s youth and B teams, gaining recognition as a promising and innovative coach. This promotion represents his first major test in charge of Europe’s most successful club, a challenge he now embraces with measured confidence and ambition.

Arbeloa’s Coaching Background at Real Madrid

Period Role Key Notes
2017–2023 Youth & B Team Coach Developed young talents; gained reputation
2017–2020 Assistant under Mourinho Learned tactical discipline, 237 matches
2026– First Team Head Coach Tasked with leading main squad; high expectations

With Real Madrid’s weighty history and the expectations of millions of fans worldwide, Arbeloa steps into a role where any misstep is magnified. Yet his philosophy is clear: learn from the greats, but forge your own path.
