In an emotional recount, Zulekha Begum, the mother of Abdullah Shamim, shared the last words of her 13-year-old son, who tragically passed away following a plane crash in Dhaka.
“Why is the hospital so far away? Can’t it be closer? Take me abroad for treatment,” Abdullah had pleaded, his voice trembling with pain as he lay severely injured. Zulekha’s heart-wrenching lament continued: “My husband wanted to live. Why did he have to leave us like this? He passed away seven months ago. How can I bear this sorrow?”
Abdullah Shamim, the son of Abul Kalam Mazhi and Zulekha Begum, was a bright 6th-grade student. Hailing from DMkhali Majikandi, Shariatpur, Abdullah was severely injured in the plane crash at Milestone School and College in Uttara, Dhaka, on Monday afternoon.
Despite immediate efforts to save him, Abdullah succumbed to his injuries and passed away around 11 PM at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Abdullah’s death has sent waves of grief through his family and community, and they are struggling to come to terms with the loss of their beloved son.
The body of Abdullah Shamim was brought to his ancestral home in Vhedorgonj, Shariatpur on Tuesday morning. His family, along with relatives and neighbours, gathered for his funeral at 9 AM at the DMkhali Charbhora High School grounds. Following the funeral prayers, Abdullah was laid to rest beside his father, Abul Kalam Mazhi, in the family graveyard.
The entire community is in mourning, with family members and villagers unable to comprehend the tragic turn of events. Abdullah’s death has left a deep void in the hearts of those who knew him.
Abdullah was the youngest in his family and had always harboured a dream of becoming a doctor. His parents, recognising his academic potential, enrolled him in Milestone School and College in Uttara after his successful studies at a madrasa.
In December 2024, Abdullah’s father, Abul Kalam Mazhi, who had been working in Saudi Arabia, passed away. The family was still reeling from his loss when Abdullah, their cherished son, tragically left them too.
Barik, Abdullah’s cousin, shared his sorrow, saying:
“Abdullah was the apple of everyone’s eye. Seven months ago, his father passed away in Saudi Arabia. We were still in mourning, and now Abdullah has left us too. Please pray that Allah grants him eternal peace in Jannah.”
Abdullah’s uncle, Saiful Islam, expressed his frustration and sorrow:
“Abdullah’s father, who worked overseas, had dreams of him becoming a doctor. After his father’s death, we all took great care of him. But we couldn’t protect him. His dream of becoming a doctor will never come true. I demand justice for those responsible for this tragedy.”
A Call for Support
The Assistant Commissioner of Vhedorgonj and Acting Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), Mohammad Mojaherul Haque, spoke out about the tragic loss of Abdullah and other children in the crash. He expressed his deepest sympathies, stating:
“A heart-wrenching tragedy has claimed the lives of Abdullah and many other children. We have been in contact with Abdullah’s family and will continue to support them in any way we can. We stand by them in this difficult time.”
Abdullah Shamim’s death is a painful reminder of the fragility of life and the harsh realities families must sometimes face. His tragic end has left his family in mourning, but his spirit, dreams, and memories will live on.
As the family and community process the immense grief, they continue to call for justice. Abdullah was a young boy with a bright future ahead of him. His passing has not only devastated his family but has also raised awareness about the need for greater safety measures in aviation and other forms of public transport.
Abdullah’s memory will remain in the hearts of those who loved him, and his story serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of cherishing each moment and pursuing our dreams, no matter the obstacles that may stand in our way.
