Abhishek Sharma Hospitalised Suddenly, Concern in Indian Cricket

Published: 11 Feb 2026, 11:16 am

India’s preparations for their crucial T20 World Cup encounter against Namibia have been thrown into uncertainty following the hospitalisation of their young opening batsman, Abhishek Sharma. The promising 21-year-old was admitted to a private hospital in Delhi due to a severe stomach infection, casting doubt over his availability for Thursday’s match.

Reports from Indian media indicate that Sharma had been feeling unwell even prior to India’s previous match against the United States. Following that game, his condition reportedly worsened, with high fever prompting intravenous saline therapy and a series of diagnostic tests. As a result, Sharma was unable to participate in the team’s practice sessions at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

Assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate addressed the media on Tuesday, stating: “Abhishek is still dealing with stomach issues. We are hopeful he will recover within the next two days, but we are monitoring him closely.”

In the match against the United States, Sharma had earned the “Golden Duck” after being dismissed without scoring and did not take the field during India’s bowling innings, with Sanju Samson covering the fielding duties throughout. He was also absent from the post-match handshakes and dressing room activities.

Meanwhile, the Indian squad has welcomed the return of all-rounder Washington Sundar, who has joined training sessions ahead of the Namibia match. Sundar is expected to contribute both with the bat and ball, providing balance to the side. On the bowling front, pacer Jasprit Bumrah has resumed full training after a 10-day break, and team physiotherapists report that he is feeling fitter and more confident than before.

The team management is now closely monitoring Sharma’s condition, balancing the need for rest with potential match readiness. Any sudden deterioration could force India to adjust their opening combination, a critical decision given the importance of maintaining a strong start in T20 encounters.

The following table summarises the current fitness and availability of key Indian players ahead of the Namibia clash:

India now face a tense 48 hours as they hope Sharma recovers in time to join the squad for the high-stakes match against Namibia. The team’s management has emphasised cautious optimism, preparing contingency plans while ensuring that the young opener receives adequate medical attention.
