Bangladeshi actress Sadika Parveen Poppy, known for her acclaimed performances and National Film Award, is once again in the headlines—not for her acting but for a disturbing issue concerning her personal safety. Poppy has reported that she has been receiving serious death threats, and the root cause appears to be a long-standing family feud over property issues. The actress has confirmed that she is deeply concerned for her life.
Poppy revealed to Kaler Kantho on Saturday that her cousin-in-law, Tarek Ahmed Chowdhury, has been threatening her for an extended period. She explained that these threats have escalated over the past year to such an extent that she was unable to return to her hometown of Khulna, even after hearing the sad news of her uncle’s death. Tarek allegedly told her that if she goes to Khulna, he will have her killed.
“I was preparing to go to Khulna on 19 November, after hearing the news of my uncle Kabir Hossain’s passing. However, Tarek called me and said that if I went to Khulna, he would kill me. Out of fear for my safety, I couldn’t go,” Poppy stated.
The actress also claimed that in 2007, she had bought land from her late uncle Kabir Hossain, but despite having legal documentation, she has not been able to take possession of it. She believes that the land is being held by her cousin-in-law Tarek and his wife, her cousin Mukta. Each time Poppy attempts to claim her rightful property, she faces further intimidation and threats.
Poppy also mentioned that she had been harassed by local political leaders in the past, especially during the tenure of the previous government. After the change in power, she claims that Tarek, now with ties to BNP (Bangladesh Nationalist Party), has continued to issue threats, explicitly stating that she will not return alive if she visits Khulna.
In response to the ongoing threats, Poppy has urged the authorities to take action for her safety. She believes that the matter requires urgent intervention and that her personal security, as well as her family’s property rights, need to be addressed through legal means.
Earlier this year, in July, another of Poppy’s uncles, Mia Babul Hossain, held a press conference accusing Tarek of illegally occupying the land. He claimed that Tarek had abused his position at Trust Bank to further his interests and had unlawfully taken possession of the property.
With the escalating threats against her, Poppy’s concerns for her safety are growing. She has now called on the government and law enforcement to provide immediate protection.
