Administration Cracks Down to Stabilise Commodity Prices

In a proactive move ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, the administration of Kazipur Upazila, Sirajganj, has launched a series of inspections to ensure essential commodities remain affordable for the local population. Early on Wednesday, 18 February, the Upazila Executive Officer (UNO), Mostafizur Rahman, visited several key markets to engage directly with traders and monitor market conditions.

According to official sources, the inspection, which ran from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, covered Sīmāntabāzār, Sonamukhi, Alampur, and Lakshmipur markets. During these visits, Mr Rahman emphasised the importance of displaying price lists clearly, avoiding overcharging, and maintaining a consistent supply of goods to meet consumer demand.

In addition to price monitoring, the administration took decisive action against illegal structures that had encroached on market spaces and pavements. Several unauthorised stalls were dismantled on the spot, while the owners of remaining structures were instructed to remove them at their own expense. The UNO warned that any illegal structures remaining during subsequent inspections would be forcibly removed.

Local shoppers have welcomed the administration’s intervention. Many expressed confidence that regular market monitoring would help maintain price stability, allowing residents to shop for Ramadan essentials without undue financial strain.

Speaking to journalists after the inspections, the UNO stated:

“During Ramadan, we will not tolerate artificial shortages or excessive profiteering. The administration will continue vigilant oversight to safeguard consumer interests. Any malpractice will be met with legal action, and unauthorised structures will be removed.”

The operation was carried out with the support of several key officials and personnel, including Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Naima Jahan Sumaiya, Upazila Agriculture Officer Shariful Islam, Livestock Officer Dr Didarul Ahsan, members of the law enforcement agencies, and local media representatives.

For clarity, the UNO’s inspection targeted the following markets:

Market Name Key Actions Taken Trader Instructions
Sīmāntabāzār Price lists verified, illegal stalls removed Maintain supply, display prices clearly
Sonamukhi Traders counselled, encroachments cleared Avoid overcharging, remove illegal structures
Alampur Market monitoring, illegal structures dismantled Ensure smooth supply and fair pricing
Lakshmipur Price and supply inspection Compliance with regulations mandatory

The administration has reiterated that ongoing monitoring and enforcement will continue throughout Ramadan to ensure fair trade and uninterrupted access to essential commodities for all residents.
