Afghan Coach on ‘Asia’s Second-Best Team’ Remark

During the Asia Cup, Rashid Khan had reportedly claimed that Afghanistan were Asia’s second-best team. However, a few days ago, Rashid clarified that this title was not one they awarded themselves, but rather one given by the media. Now, Afghanistan’s head coach Jonathan Trott has weighed in, stating that the team is not second-best at present and has fallen considerably behind.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, 5 October, Trott said:“Asia’s second-best team? Actually, we are not at that level currently. Social media and media discussions are not always accurate. We need to become better and stronger. Of course, I would like us to be second-best — ideally, I want us to be the very best. But for that, we must improve further.”

On the team’s recent performances, Trott commented: “It has been a disappointing performance. We lost badly. Naturally, some changes will come to the squad. A few players were unavailable, so we wanted to give opportunities to younger players. Keeping the World Cup in mind, we are shaping the team for the future. There is a tri-nation series in Pakistan at the end of November. I hope we can build a team that starts winning matches consistently.”

Regarding playing conditions, Trott said: “I don’t think conditions were a factor. Over the past few years, we’ve won plenty of matches. The issue is that we simply did not play our best cricket. At the end of the day, everyone must stay confident. As a coach, it’s essential for me to keep everyone in a good frame of mind. I want the players to feel confident on the field. Performing under pressure is key to improving our overall results.”

Speaking about the team captain, Trott added: “Any international team faces challenges when playing against Rashid Khan, wherever he plays, because he is capable of taking wickets consistently. But that’s not the whole story. As captain, he takes responsibility and puts in tremendous effort on the field. His performance has been very strong, and his quality is exceptional. His performances inspire the rest of the team, which will boost confidence.”
