Afghanistan Revives Hopes with First World Cup Win

Afghanistan endured a bitter start to their World Cup campaign, suffering defeats in their opening two matches, which left their prospects of reaching the Super Eight stage uncertain. However, in a crucial third fixture, they secured their first victory of the tournament by defeating the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by five wickets, keeping their hopes alive under the leadership of captain Rashid Khan.

On Monday, 16 February, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, Afghanistan lost the toss and were invited to field first. The UAE posted a total of 160 for 9 in their allotted 20 overs. The innings was anchored by Shoaib Khan, who scored 68 runs, and Ali Sharf, who contributed 40. Their partnership added 84 runs, providing some resistance amid Afghanistan’s disciplined bowling attack.

Afghanistan’s bowlers delivered a strong performance. Azmatullah Omarzai took four wickets for just 15 runs in four overs, while captain Rashid Khan claimed one wicket for 24 runs. The milestone of the match came in the 16th over when Muhammad Afran dismissed a UAE batter via a hit wicket, marking his 700th wicket in international cricket—a first in the history of the sport.

Chasing a modest target of 163, Afghanistan suffered an early blow when Rahmanullah Gurbaz was dismissed on the second delivery of the innings. Nevertheless, opener Ibrahim Zadran and Azmatullah Omarzai steadied the innings with a composed partnership. Zadran scored 53 off 41 balls before getting out, while Omarzai remained unbeaten on 40 off 21 balls, guiding Afghanistan to a comfortable five-wicket win.

The victory brings Afghanistan’s points tally to two from three matches, equal to that of the UAE, who are still searching for their first win. Meanwhile, New Zealand has accumulated four points from three games, and South Africa tops the table with six points from as many matches. Afghanistan’s win also ensures that South Africa’s place in the Super Eight is virtually guaranteed.

Team Matches Wins Losses Points
South Africa 3 3 0 6
New Zealand 3 2 1 4
Afghanistan 3 1 2 2
United Arab Emirates 3 0 3 2

The triumph not only boosts the morale of the Afghan squad but also highlights the emergence of their young talent. With Rashid Khan’s leadership and contributions from players like Omarzai and Zadran, Afghanistan have demonstrated that they remain a competitive force, capable of challenging higher-ranked teams in the tournament. This win could be pivotal in shaping their remaining World Cup campaign.
