After an absence of 17 long years, Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has finally returned to Bangladesh and was seen at his mother’s bedside at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. On Thursday, 25 December, following a grand reception ceremony at the 300-feet area in the capital, Tarique arrived at the hospital in a red-and-green vehicle amid enthusiastic supporters.
The convoy carrying him halted at the hospital gate at 5:50 pm. By 5:54 pm, Tarique alighted and, accompanied by party leaders and loyal supporters, walked into the hospital. Along the way, he paused multiple times, extending greetings and shaking hands with jubilant party members gathered along the hospital perimeter.
Among those present to receive him at Evercare Hospital were senior BNP figures including Salahuddin Ahmed and AZM Zahid Hossain, reflecting the importance of the occasion. Prior to the hospital visit, Tarique had delivered an address at the 300-feet Expressway reception site, celebrating his long-awaited return. The vehicle carrying him was delayed due to the immense crowd lining the streets on either side, eager for a glimpse of their leader. Tarique acknowledged the supporters with waves, reciprocating their affection.
Earlier that morning, Tarique’s flight touched down at Sylhet Osmani International Airport at 10:00 am. Prior to landing, he shared an emotional message on his verified Facebook page, stating: “After 6,314 days, back under the skies of Bangladesh!”
His journey from London began on Wednesday night, 24 December. The flight departed from Heathrow Airport at 11:45 pm local time. On the same day, Tarique left his London residence at 8:45 pm, accompanied by his wife, Zobaida Rahman, and daughter, Jaime Rahman, arriving at Heathrow Airport around 10:45 pm.
The return of Tarique Rahman marks a historic moment in Bangladeshi politics, drawing thousands of supporters to witness his arrival and pay respects at his mother’s bedside, highlighting his enduring popularity and the anticipation surrounding his homecoming.
