After three consecutive draws, Real Madrid had returned to winning ways last week by defeating Athletic Bilbao. However, Javi Alonso’s team could not maintain the momentum. On Sunday night, they lost 2–0 at home to Celta Vigo, reduced to nine players.
Celta’s victory came with multiple records. The team had waited 19 years to beat Real at Santiago Bernabéu and defeated them for the first time in 11 years. Although Real dominated possession and attack, they failed to score. In the second half, Swedish midfielder Williot Swidberg scored in the 54th and added-time third minute to secure Celta’s win.
The match was made even harder for Real with two red cards. Left-back Fran Garcia left the field in the 64th minute after a second yellow. Defender Alvaro Carreras also received a red card in added time. Additionally, bench player Endrik was shown red. After the match, Javi Alonso said, “I was not happy with the refereeing.”
This was the first time in 20 years that two Real players received red cards in a single La Liga home game. With this loss, Real has dropped 9 of 15 points in the last five matches. The gap to leaders Barcelona has increased to four points.
Alonso added, “We want to move forward quickly. It’s just three points. We have a chance to recover in the Champions League against Manchester City.”
