After being missing for three days, the body of an Indian woman was found in the United States

Authorities in Maryland have recovered the body of a 27-year-old Indian woman from her former partner’s apartment, three days after she was reported missing on New Year’s Eve. The victim, Nikitha Godhishala, was found stabbed to death, prompting a full-scale investigation by local law enforcement.

Nikitha, a resident of Ellicott City in Howard County, worked professionally as a data and strategy analyst. Her death has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting concerns about intimate partner violence and safety.

According to the Howard County Police Department, Nikitha’s body was discovered in the apartment of her ex-boyfriend, 26-year-old Arjun Sharma. Authorities have issued arrest warrants for Sharma on charges of first- and second-degree murder.

Investigators revealed that Sharma filed the missing person report on 2 January, claiming he last saw Nikitha in his apartment on 31 December. Following this report, police conducted a search of the apartment on 3 January, where they recovered Nikitha’s body. She had sustained multiple stab wounds.

Police further stated that Sharma departed the United States for India on the same day he reported Nikitha missing. Preliminary investigations suggest the murder likely occurred after 7:00 pm on 31 December, although the motive remains unclear. Howard County Police confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and federal law enforcement agencies are assisting in efforts to apprehend Sharma.

The Indian Embassy has issued a statement confirming that it is in close contact with Nikitha Godhishala’s family and providing full consular support. The embassy is also maintaining regular communication with local authorities to monitor the case.

Extradition between the United States and India is governed by a bilateral treaty. However, in cases involving serious crimes such as murder, the extradition process requires both judicial review and diplomatic coordination, which can often take several months.
