Vidya, a resident of Bengaluru, India, stated in her dying declaration to the police that her husband had injected mercury into her body with a syringe while she slept. After remaining under treatment for nine months, she passed away earlier this month. Doctors confirmed that multiple organs had been damaged due to mercury poisoning.
According to reports from media outlets, Vidya and her husband Basavaraj lived in the Attibele area of Bengaluru. Before her death, Vidya said that she went to sleep on the night of 26 February and awoke the following evening. Upon waking, she felt severe pain in her right thigh and suspected she had been injected. Her leg later became swollen, making it difficult for her to walk.
As her condition deteriorated, she visited the government hospital in Attibele on 7 March. She was then referred to Oxford Hospital, where preliminary tests indicated mercury poisoning. The presence of mercury was further confirmed after samples were collected through surgery and analysed.
In her statement, Vidya said that a laboratory technician couple, employed at SLN Diagnostic Centre, had supplied Basavaraj with chloroform, a syringe, and mercury. Basavaraj’s father, Mariswamyachari, had also assisted him in the act.
Vidya alleged that mercury was injected into her body with the intention of killing her. She had reportedly been subjected to regular abuse, humiliation, and neglect. Her husband frequently called her ‘insane’, confined her to the house, and prevented her from visiting relatives.
After receiving treatment at Oxford Hospital for over a month, she was transferred to Victoria Hospital. Doctors stated that her entire body had been affected by mercury poisoning, and damage to multiple organs, including the kidneys, eventually required dialysis. Following nine months of continuous treatment, she passed away.
Vidya and Basavaraj have a four-year-old child.
