After the grand final, a new history in FIFA rankings: Morocco–Senegal

Morocco and Senegal have made history in the latest FIFA rankings, following an electrifying Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign that captivated the continent. Although Morocco narrowly missed out on claiming the continental crown for the first time in 50 years, the ‘Atlas Lions’ received a historic consolation: they have reached their highest-ever FIFA ranking.

According to the latest rankings released yesterday, Morocco have climbed three places to eighth in the world. Previously, the 2022 World Cup semi-finalists’ best-ever ranking was tenth, achieved in April 1998—a record that stood for nearly a quarter of a century. Ashraf Hakimi and his teammates now find themselves among the world’s elite, reflecting their consistent rise on the global stage.

Senegal, who clinched their second continental title in AFCON, have also reached a career-best position. Sadio Mané’s squad advanced seven places to 12th, surpassing their previous high of 17th in 2024. This rise further cements Senegal’s reputation as a continental powerhouse.

Despite these remarkable achievements, the record for the highest FIFA ranking by an African team remains with Nigeria, who reached fifth in April 1994. Among Arab nations, Egypt holds the highest historical ranking, having reached ninth in July 2010.

AFCON 2025 caused significant shifts across the continent. Nigeria, who secured the bronze medal, recorded the largest point gain with 79.09 points, climbing 12 positions to 26th. Cameroon also rose 12 places, now standing 45th, making both teams the biggest movers in this update. Egypt, who reached the semi-finals, moved up four places to 31st, just three positions below Algeria.

Conversely, some teams suffered notable drops. Gabon, eliminated in the group stage, lost 44.97 points, falling to 86th, while Guinea slid 10 places to 107th.

At the top of the global rankings, positions one to seven remain unchanged. Spain leads the standings, followed by Argentina, with France, England, Brazil, Portugal, and the Netherlands completing the top seven.
