AI Warfare: Accelerated Decisions in the Iran Conflict

The recent joint military operations conducted by the United States and Israel against Iran have unveiled a chilling new frontier in modern combat: the era of “algorithmic warfare”. Experts are sounding the alarm that the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has accelerated battle planning to a velocity that outpaces human cognition—a phenomenon being described as “decision compression”.

The Rise of the “Kill Chain” Automation

According to reports from The Guardian, the US military has utilised advanced AI models, including Anthropic’s “Claude”, to streamline the complex process known as the “kill chain”. This involves everything from initial target identification and intelligence synthesis to the procurement of legal clearance and the final authorisation of strikes.

While Israel has previously employed AI-driven targeting systems in Gaza, the scale of the Iranian operation is unprecedented. Within the first 12 hours of the campaign, approximately 900 strikes were carried out. One such calculated strike resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The Peril of “Decision Compression”

Dr Craig Jones, a Senior Lecturer at Newcastle University, suggests that military planning, which once required days or weeks of human deliberation, is now being finalised in seconds. “The AI offers recommendations at a speed exceeding human thought,” he noted. Consequently, human officers and legal experts are increasingly reduced to a “rubber-stamping” role, merely providing a formal signature on machine-generated directives.

David Leslie, Professor of Technology Ethics at Queen Mary University of London, warns of “cognitive off-loading.” By delegating the moral and strategic weight of decision-making to an algorithm, commanders risk becoming emotionally and ethically detached from the lethal consequences of their actions.

The Human Cost and Legal Violations

The efficiency of these systems has not prevented tragedy. On Saturday, a missile strike on a school in southern Iran—reportedly located near a military barracks—resulted in the deaths of at least 165 people, the majority of whom were children. The United Nations has condemned the incident as a “grave violation of international humanitarian law,” while the Pentagon has launched an internal investigation.

A Growing Asymmetry

While Iran claimed in 2025 to be developing its own AI-targeted missile capabilities, international sanctions have left Tehran significantly behind the technological curve of the US and China. As Prerna Joshi of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) observes, AI is no longer just about the front line; it is revolutionising logistics, training, and maintenance.

The rapid proliferation of AI in warfare promises a future of clinical efficiency, but it simultaneously presents the ultimate challenge: maintaining human accountability in a world where the machines decide who lives and who dies.
