In Chuadanga’s Jiban Nagar, the death of BNP leader Md. Shamsuzzaman, also known as DABLU (50), following his detention during a military operation, has prompted the withdrawal of all personnel involved, including the camp commander. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) has also announced the formation of a high-level investigation committee to determine the precise circumstances of the incident.
According to an ISPR statement released on Tuesday, the operation took place at approximately 11:00 pm, based on credible intelligence regarding the possession of illegal firearms. The joint forces conducted a special raid near Jiban Nagar Upazila Health Complex, where Shamsuzzaman was detained at his business premises, Hafiza Pharmacy, following allegations of storing illegal weapons.
The statement added that during a subsequent search, the authorities recovered one 9mm pistol, one magazine, and four bullets. Shortly after the detention, Shamsuzzaman became suddenly unwell and lost consciousness. He was immediately taken to the Jiban Nagar Upazila Health Complex, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 12:25 am by the attending medical team.
ISPR described the incident as “unfortunate, deeply regrettable, and in no way acceptable.” The camp commander and all soldiers involved have been withdrawn to the cantonment, pending a thorough investigation. The high-ranking committee will examine the causes of the incident, and those found responsible will face appropriate legal action under military law.
Shamsuzzaman was the General Secretary of Jiban Nagar BNP. News of his detention and subsequent death sparked immediate unrest, with BNP leaders and supporters taking to the streets late at night. Protesters set fire to the road in front of the hospital and chanted slogans, claiming the death was a deliberate killing and demanding justice for those involved.
