Seven days after the violent clash between students and local villagers at Chittagong University (CU), Imtiaz Ahmed, a student of the Department of International Relations, has regained consciousness. Doctors report that his physical condition is improving. Another injured student, Abdullah Al Mamun from the Department of Sociology, is also gradually recovering.
Dr A T M Rezaul Karim, Managing Director of Parkview Hospital, stated that under the observation of the medical board on Saturday morning, Imtiaz’s life support was removed. After this, he was able to recognise his parents and brother and could engage in brief conversations. Currently, he is breathing normally, and his cognitive function is almost at a normal level. However, he will remain in the ICU for a few more days for observation.
Mamun’s physical condition is also showing improvement. On Saturday, he was assisted to walk briefly. Doctors have cautioned, however, that surgery to replace his skull may take several months to complete.
Photos and videos of Mamun walking have circulated widely on social media, sparking controversy. In the images, he appears to be supported by another person’s shoulder and raising his hand. Many observers have speculated that efforts are being made to portray him as healthier than he actually is.
Mamun’s brother, Masud Rana, questioned whether his brother could genuinely walk in this manner, stating that Mamun is currently trying to communicate through gestures and writing, but his recovery is still ongoing.
The hospital clarified that walking and other exercises are part of the rehabilitation process. The surgeon who performed Mamun’s operation personally supervised these exercises. During this session, a university teacher took photos and posted them on Facebook.
The injuries occurred on 31 August during a violent clash, in which both Imtiaz and Mamun suffered serious head wounds from sharp weapons. They were immediately placed on life support following surgery that same night. While Mamun was later moved to a cabin for continued care, Imtiaz remains in the ICU.
The clash itself originated on 30 August near Gate 2 of Chittagong University, over allegations of an assault on a female student. The confrontation escalated overnight and continued until the following afternoon, leaving over 400 students injured. According to local villagers, at least 30 residents were also injured during the incident.
