Serious allegations of fraud and embezzlement have been levelled against Rashed Khan, former Secretary-General of the Ganadhikar Parishad and the BNP-nominated candidate for Jhenaidah-4. The claims were made by affected family members during a press conference held at a local auditorium in Kaliganj town on Monday, 9 February, at noon.
Speaking at the press conference, banker Rasel Ahmed, his father Tajuddin Ahmed, Ganadhikar Parishad leader Zahura Begum, and Rasel Ahmed’s wife presented documentary evidence purportedly demonstrating financial misconduct by Rashed Khan.
Rasel Ahmed stated, “Rashed Khan, on multiple occasions, lured me with promises of employment and political advancement, through which he allegedly obtained sums exceeding tens of millions of taka. I provided these funds to cover personal and family expenses. Over a period of one and a half years, he reportedly extracted more than 3.2 million taka from me. Even prior to his China trip, he continued to demand money.”
He further claimed, “He asserted that being active in national politics would enable the purchase of high-end mobile phones and laptops. I also covered the cost of these items at his request. Most recently, he received the payments for 16 installments of a car, registered under a Dhaka resident’s name. Consequently, my family and I have been left financially destitute.”
Amirul Islam, a resident of Kumrabaria village in Jhenaidah Sadar, said, “Rashed Khan promised me a position as a peon at the Jhenaidah branch of Jessore Science and Technology University and took 500,000 taka from me, but I received neither the job nor the money back.”
Zahura Begum, Senior Joint Convener of the Women’s Rights Council, added, “I contributed 500,000 taka to Rashed Khan, motivated by the prospects of election-related benefits.”
In response to the allegations, Rashed Khan categorically denied all claims. “These accusations are completely baseless. I have never accepted money in exchange for employment. I am being targeted by a conspiracy, and it would be prudent not to give these rumours further attention,” he stated.
The table below summarises the key allegations presented at the press conference:
| Victim Name | Type of Allegation | Amount (BDT) | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rasel Ahmed | Money taken under pretext of promises | 3,200,000+ | For mobile phones, laptops, car, expenses |
| Amirul Islam | Job offer scam | 500,000 | Neither job nor money received |
| Zahura Begum | Electoral inducement | 500,000 | Funds taken for party programmes |
The victims present at the conference urged the government to ensure justice and called for strict action against such alleged fraudulent practices. They emphasised that accountability must be enforced to prevent similar incidents in the future.
