Tensions have escalated in the Nilphamari-1 constituency (Domar-Dimla) ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections, with reports emerging of attacks and arson targeting the homes of minority communities. Allegations point to local leaders and activists of the Jamaat-e-Islami party as being responsible for the incidents, reportedly sparked by disputes over voter support. A video capturing part of the episode has circulated widely on social media, drawing national attention.
In the video, a local resident recounts that a private car belonging to the younger brother of BNP candidate Maulana Manjurul Islam Afendi broke down by the roadside. While efforts were underway to repair the vehicle, a group of individuals on motorcycles, identified as Jamaat-e-Islami activists, arrived and created a hostile situation. When local members of the minority community attempted to intervene and protect the area, the attackers allegedly turned violent, reportedly setting fire to several homes.
Another witness questioned the motives behind the violence, stating: “Afendi’s brother had not come to solicit votes. Why then was such aggression directed at him, and why were the homes of minority families set ablaze? If this is their conduct now, what might happen if they win the election?”
Community members emphasised that voting decisions remain a private matter. One resident remarked, “The minority community has the right to choose whom to vote for. These attacks appear to be retaliatory, aimed at coercing people into supporting Jamaat-e-Islami.” Many families expressed fear and requested immediate assistance, highlighting the psychological toll of the attacks.
Authorities intervened after reports indicated that the situation was spiralling out of control. Dimla Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Md. Rawshan Kabir, accompanied by police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel, arrived at the scene to restore order and instructed all parties to remain calm.
The following table summarises the key details of the reported incidents:
| Incident | Location | Alleged Perpetrators | Target | Authorities’ Response |
