While Bangladesh’s cricket team was barred from travelling to India over security concerns, the nation’s shooting squad has been granted permission to participate in the upcoming Asian Championship in Delhi. The contrasting decisions have sparked debate over the government’s approach to sporting safety and raised questions about the broader implications for the country’s sporting reputation.
Following Bangladesh’s inability to compete in the World Cup, discussions have intensified about the financial and reputational losses the cricketing setback may have caused. Many critics worry that repeated security-related withdrawals could undermine cricket’s status as the country’s premier sport. In this context, the Youth and Sports Ministry’s approval for the shooting team to travel to India has added fuel to the ongoing discourse.
Speaking yesterday, Ministry Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam clarified the decision:
“The shooting team has been issued a government order after a thorough review. In this instance, we found that there is no significant security threat. Shooting competitions generally take place in controlled indoor venues. Furthermore, organisers have assured the federation regarding the safety measures in place.”
The Shooting Federation had applied for the government order (GO) last week. Olympic-bound shooter Robiul Islam will represent Bangladesh, accompanied by coach Sharmin Akhter. The GO was forwarded through the National Sports Council for approval by the office of the Youth and Sports Adviser. The team faced a period of uncertainty due to the proximity of the competition and the lack of official response from the ministry, but formal clearance was finally received yesterday.
Regarding the cricket team’s cancelled tour, Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam placed much of the responsibility on the Indian hosts and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI):
“The ICC provided guidance on security, but the hosts—India and the BCCI—did not give us any assurances. Had they done so, the situation might have been different.”
Robiul Islam expressed full confidence in the federation and ministry’s decision:
“I trust they have carefully considered all aspects before granting this approval. My focus is entirely on my performance. I am fully prepared for this championship.”
Because shooters must carry firearms, the Ministry of Home Affairs must also issue a no-objection certificate. Robiul is currently awaiting this clearance before travelling.
