An accused in a robbery case dies in Lakshmipur district

A prisoner named Abul Bashar has died while in custody at Lakshmipur District Jail, authorities confirmed yesterday morning. His body has been sent to the mortuary of Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Bashar, a resident of Bhawani Jibanpur village in Chayani Union of Begumganj Upazila, Noakhali District, was arrested in connection with a robbery case and admitted to the jail on 16 January. According to the acting District Jail Superintendent, Nur Mohammad Sohel, Bashar had a history of multiple imprisonments for various offences. He was reportedly suffering from respiratory issues and heart disease.

On the morning of his death, Bashar reportedly left the bathroom and collapsed upon entering the ward. Fellow inmates rushed him to the jail’s medical facility, from where he was transferred to Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital. Medical staff pronounced him dead shortly thereafter.

Speaking to the press, Bashar’s daughter, Rabeya Begum, alleged that her father was unlawfully taken from his home by DB Police in a fabricated case. “My father was subjected to physical and psychological abuse for several days. Despite his critical health condition, he was sent to jail, where he ultimately died,” she said. She called for a thorough investigation and exemplary punishment for those responsible.

The incident relates to a robbery that took place on the night of 8 January at the residence of Arab Ali Molla in Titarkandi, South-East Charshahi Union, Sadar Upazila. According to Chandraganj Police, a gang of 10–12 individuals stole cash amounting to BDT 64,000, gold jewellery weighing 11 ana (approximately BDT 152,000 in value), and six mobile phones, with a total estimated loss of BDT 306,500.

Following the complaint, police launched an operation using information technology support and arrested Bashar along with two others—Badsha Mia and Alauddin—on 15 January. Bashar faced multiple cases in Noakhali, including charges related to weapons, robbery, and murder.
