Hollywood star Angelina Jolie, renowned worldwide for her humanitarian work, recently made a visit to Ukraine, though her trip to the war-torn country led to some unexpected incidents. Acting as a United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Goodwill Ambassador, this marked Jolie’s second visit to Ukraine.
She had previously travelled to Lviv in 2022, following Russia’s invasion of the country. This time, however, she ventured into far more dangerous areas, including the frontline city of Kherson and other conflict-affected regions in southern Ukraine.
During the visit, Jolie toured several children’s hospitals, maternity wards, and other emergency service centres. Photos circulated on social media show the Oscar-winning actress wearing a bulletproof vest and helmet. Other images capture her smiling and spending time with children who had been affected by recent Russian attacks. Her presence, while bringing hope to many, also highlighted the precarious conditions faced by civilians in these regions.
However, the trip was not without complications. According to international news outlet Politico, a member of Jolie’s team, who was reportedly her driver, was detained at a checkpoint and instructed to join the Ukrainian armed forces immediately.
It has been reported that Jolie’s visit was not coordinated with the Ukrainian government, and she entered the country on foot. While the Ukrainian Army Land Forces later shared a statement regarding the incident, it was quickly deleted. The authorities did not explicitly confirm or deny the details of what had occurred.
Jolie’s daring journey underscores both the risks faced by humanitarian figures in active conflict zones and her commitment to supporting children and vulnerable communities in the midst of war. Her visit also brought international attention to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in southern Ukraine, emphasising the urgent need for aid and protection for civilians.
