In the wake of ongoing protests within the National Board of Revenue (NBR), yet another official has been sent into compulsory retirement. The latest to face such action is Lokman Ahmed, a Grade-10 Tax Inspector at Tax Zone-2, Dhaka.

This decision was made official through a gazette notification signed by NBR Chairman Md Abdur Rahman Khan on Sunday, 3 August.

Details of the Compulsory Retirement:

Officer Name Position Office Reason for Retirement Benefits Entitled
Lokman Ahmed Tax Inspector (Grade-10) Tax Zone-2, Dhaka Completion of 25 years in government service Eligible for all retirement benefits under existing rules

According to the notification, Mr Ahmed was retired due to completion of 25 years in public service, a move permitted by standard government employment regulations. However, NBR sources revealed that he was previously a leading figure in the recent staff movement within the board. Multiple other officials involved in this movement have either been suspended or compulsorily retired in recent weeks.

Background of the Unrest:

Date Event
12 May Government dissolved NBR and the Internal Resources Division, forming two new departments:
Revenue Policy Division and Revenue Administration Division.
28–29 June Programmes called by the NBR Reform Unity Council led to a virtual shutdown of customs, VAT, and income tax operations, severely hampering revenue collection.

The protest movement by NBR officials, triggered by organisational restructuring, has been intensifying since the government’s major reshuffle announcement in May. The administrative paralysis during the June protests underlines the serious internal discord within the institution.

This latest retirement of Lokman Ahmed sends a strong signal that the administration is determined to restore order, even if it means sidelining protest leaders.
