Anti-Corruption Commission Raids Former Cancer Institute Director’s Office over Tk 20 Billion Cheque Scandal

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has carried out a raid at the office of Professor Dr Sheikh Golam Mostafa, the former Director of the National Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital (NICRH). Allegations suggest that he attempted to lure a former coordinator with cash and cheques totalling Tk 20 billion in exchange for securing a position as a health adviser.

Allegations at a Glance

Alleged Transaction Details
Cash Tk 1 million (10 lakh)
Cheques Four cheques totalling Tk 20 billion (2,000 crore)
Beneficiary A former coordinator (identified as Arefin)
Middleman Ariful Islam (claiming to be Arefin’s brother)
Method Cheques collected directly from Dr Mostafa’s chamber; deal confirmed over the phone by Arefin

According to ACC sources, the incident dates back to January this year. Acting as a middleman, Ariful Islam—who introduced himself as the brother of former coordinator Arefin—collected the cheques directly from Dr Mostafa’s office. Although Arefin was not physically present, the transaction was allegedly confirmed through a phone conversation.

The ACC taskforce conducting the operation confirmed that Dr Mostafa’s bank accounts, financial transactions, and communications with the coordinator’s group are under thorough investigation. The authenticity of the cheques and the details of the alleged financial arrangement are also being scrutinised.

Deputy Director of the ACC, Md Akhtarul Islam, stated: “We are currently verifying allegations of abuse of power, accumulation of illicit wealth, and bribery aimed at securing positions through dishonest means. Further details will be disclosed upon completion of the operation.”

The raid marks another high-profile move by the ACC as it continues its drive to uncover corruption within Bangladesh’s health sector.
