Bollywood veteran Anupam Kher recently shared his admiration for Bengali cinema, particularly after watching Rituparna Sengupta’s new film “Bela”. Although he does not regularly watch Bengali films, Kher was reportedly impressed during a special screening in Kolkata.
According to Indian media reports, Kher had travelled to Kolkata last month for the special screening of his own film “Tanvir the Great”. During this visit, he learned that his friend Rituparna Sengupta’s new film “Bela” was releasing in the same theatre.
Curious about the actress’s work under director Anilabha Chattopadhyay, Kher watched part of the film. Reflecting on the experience, he said: “I watched the first fifteen minutes of the film. Despite being a new director, Anilabha has made a very good film. I truly enjoyed watching it. Bengali cinema produces some excellent work.”
Kher also remarked on the similarity between film premieres across languages: “The premiere of a Bengali film is no different from a Hindi film premiere. In both cases, the release of a new film is celebrated with joy.”
Meanwhile, Kher’s forthcoming film “The Bengal Files” has already become a subject of controversy. When asked about it, he diplomatically avoided commenting directly.
With a smile, he said: “The film and any controversy surrounding it—those questions should be addressed by the director, Vivek Agnihotri. I can only speak about my character. In this film, viewers will see me portraying the role of Gandhiji.”
