Celebrated composer A R Rahman, whose illustrious career spans over three decades and boasts countless chart-topping songs, national and international honours, and two Academy Awards, has recently made provocative remarks regarding the current state of Bollywood. Revered globally for his musical genius, Rahman, often hailed as the “Mozart of Madras,” claims that his opportunities in Hindi cinema have diminished over the past eight years.
According to the composer, two primary factors have contributed to this decline. Firstly, shifts in power and decision-making structures within the industry have allowed “irrelevant and unqualified individuals” to influence project allocations. Secondly, Rahman hinted at the potential impact of religious bias, noting that while no one has directly communicated prejudice to him, he has heard whispers suggesting its presence. In a recent interview, he stated:
“Since the change of power, opportunities have begun to dwindle. Many of those in decision-making positions lack creativity. Religious bias may also play a role—no one says it openly, but there are murmurs.”
Observers have long noted that Rahman’s work in South Indian cinema significantly outpaces his contributions to Bollywood, a trend now confirmed by the composer himself. His remarks have sparked considerable debate within political and cultural spheres. Opposition parties have targeted the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has denied any wrongdoing.
Union Minister Ramdas Athawale dismissed Rahman’s allegations, emphasising that many Muslim actors, including Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, and Aamir Khan, continue to thrive in Hindi cinema, enjoying widespread acclaim both in India and abroad. Meanwhile, Syed Basha, head of the BJP’s minority front, refuted the claim that Rahman was sidelined under the party’s tenure, pointing out that blockbuster projects such as Slumdog Millionaire and Madras Cafe were completed during this period, and Rahman was awarded a National Film Award in 2022 on merit.
The table below summarises some of Rahman’s recent notable films and the awards he has received:
| Year | Film | Award / Recognition |
|---|---|---|
| 2009 | Slumdog Millionaire | Two Academy Awards (Best Original Score & Song) |
| 2013 | Madras Cafe | National Film Award (Best Music Director) |
| 2022 | Yugantarak Film | National Film Award (Best Music) |
Overall, the debate over Rahman’s position in Bollywood during the BJP administration remains contentious. Nonetheless, his talent, experience, and international acclaim continue to secure his unique status in India’s music industry. His recent statements have reignited discussions on artistic policy, religious dynamics, and the future trajectory of Bollywood music.
