Armed Attack on Doctor in Magura Sparks Outrage

An alarming incident at the Mohammadpur Upazila Health Complex in Magura has sent shockwaves through the local community, after a doctor was violently attacked by a group of assailants. The attack, which targeted Dr. Asadur Rahman, was captured on CCTV and widely circulated on social media, provoking widespread public outrage.

A formal case was filed at Mohammadpur Police Station late on Friday night, 13 February 2026, naming nine individuals as suspects. On Saturday afternoon at 4:30 pm, one of the accused, Mazharul Islam, was apprehended. Police operations to arrest the remaining suspects are ongoing.

Details of the Incident

According to the CCTV footage, at 12:02 pm on Friday, a group of 10–12 men entered the hospital’s emergency department. They forcibly dragged Dr. Rahman from his chair and assaulted him with punches, kicks, and attempts to strike him with sticks.

Dr. Rahman recounted the harrowing experience: “I was attending to a patient suffering from breathing difficulties after treating two victims of a motorcycle accident. When an individual approached me to talk, I asked him to wait outside. He refused and began occupying the patient’s chair, causing disruption. When I requested him to leave the chair, he became aggressive and attacked me.”

Hospital sources noted that the patient involved, Nur Mohammad, is related to Arifuzzaman Milton, a local volunteer leader. The confrontation over this patient appears to have triggered the violent outburst.

Police and Medical Community Response

Kazi Abu Ahsan, Upazila Health Officer, confirmed that a written complaint was filed and called for enhanced protection for healthcare staff. The Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA), Magura branch, demanded the immediate arrest of all involved and warned of strict action if their demands are not met.

Mohammadpur Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman, stated, “Nine individuals have been named in the case. Mazharul Islam was arrested on Saturday afternoon, and the operation to apprehend the other suspects continues.”
