Armed Robbery on Night Train, Two Arrested

A daring armed robbery took place late on Wednesday night aboard the Haor Express, which operates on the Dhaka–Mohanpur route, leaving passengers shaken but ultimately leading to the arrest of two suspects. Quick-thinking travellers overpowered the robbers and handed them over to railway police, preventing a potentially more serious incident.

According to official sources, the train departed from Dhaka’s Kamalapur Railway Station at 10:00 pm, bound for Mohanganj. After a scheduled halt at Mymensingh Railway Junction, the train resumed its journey. At this point, members of a gang disguised in civilian clothing boarded the moving train, entering Coach ‘ঞ’, and began threatening passengers with weapons while looting valuables.

Passengers from Mohanganj Upazila—Ratan Mia of Tetulia, Sarwar Mia of Khaliakuri, and Anay Bishwasharma of Barhatta—described the harrowing experience. “The robbers threatened us with knives and tried to steal jewellery, mobile phones, wallets, and cash,” said one witness. “We coordinated and launched a counterattack, which enabled us to capture two of the gang members. The remaining robbers jumped from the train near the Outer Signal of Gauripur Station and escaped into the darkness.”

The two arrested individuals have been identified as:

Name Age Residence Items Seized
Azmail Hossain Nijhum 30 Kewatkhali, Mymensingh Large steel knife, mobile phone
Md. Mehedi Hasan Tanvir 18 Balashpur, Kewatkhali Large steel knife, mobile phone

The suspects were subsequently handed over to Mohanpur Railway Police Station. In a statement on Thursday, Station In-Charge Mobarok Hossain confirmed that both suspects were later transferred to the Mymensingh Railway Police. The authorities also recovered two large steel knives and two mobile phones from the suspects.

Police have emphasised that such incidents highlight the need for enhanced security measures on night trains. They are urging passengers to remain vigilant and to report suspicious activity immediately. Officials have also indicated plans to strengthen surveillance and patrolling along this busy railway route to ensure the safety of commuters.

The incident has sparked concern among frequent travellers, especially regarding personal safety during overnight journeys. However, passenger courage and swift police action prevented what could have been a more serious crime, demonstrating the effectiveness of community vigilance combined with law enforcement.
