In Narayanganj, Bangladesh, notorious criminal Sohag, 34, has been apprehended by a joint law enforcement team following a high-profile public shooting nearly ten months ago in the Adamjee Export Processing Zone (EPZ). The arrest took place in the early hours of Tuesday, 13 January, in Kadamtali, Siddhirganj, along with two of his associates, Abdul Jalil, 32, and Md. Parvez, 25.
All three are residents of various localities under Siddhirganj Police Station. Sohag is known as the cousin of Rakibur Rahman Sagar, former president of Narayanganj Metropolitan Chhatra Dal, adding a political dimension to his notoriety.
Police reports indicate that in March 2025, Sohag was seen openly brandishing firearms during a violent clash over control of the cotton trade at a garment factory in Adamjee EPZ. The confrontation left at least eight individuals injured and caused extensive damage to several motorcycles, some of which were set on fire. A video of the incident circulated widely on social media, prompting a nationwide outcry and forcing Sohag into hiding for nearly ten months.
Siddhirganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Barik stated that the operation leading to the arrest was based on a tip-off. “We raided a location in Kadamtali at dawn and apprehended Sohag with his two accomplices. All were reportedly under the influence of narcotics at the time,” he said. While no firearms were recovered, police confiscated 120 yaba tablets from their possession.
According to the OC, Sohag has an extensive criminal record involving narcotics and other offences. His associates, Jalil and Parvez, are also facing ongoing investigations for drug-related and other criminal cases. Sohag has not confessed to any firearm-related charges; however, the authorities plan to request a remand for further interrogation. Should any weapons be recovered, he will face charges under the arms law.
The March 6, 2025 clash at the Universal Garment Factory in Adamjee EPZ was reportedly triggered by competition over the cotton trade between two factions of the BNP. During the violence, several rounds of live ammunition were fired, and property destruction, including arson, was recorded. Witnesses confirm that Sohag was actively firing a pistol in public before fleeing the scene, eluding arrest until this week.

This arrest marks a significant breakthrough in a case that had captured nationwide attention due to the audacious nature of the crime and the extended period Sohag remained at large. Police have assured that the investigation will continue and any further offences will be rigorously prosecuted.
