Arsenal Overcome Palace in Penalty Shoot-Out

Mikel Arteta described Arsenal’s Carabao Cup quarter-final victory over Crystal Palace as “emotionally tough” after his side conceded a stoppage-time equaliser, before ultimately prevailing 8-7 on penalties following a 1-1 draw at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal dominated the opening exchanges, creating numerous chances that could have settled the tie well before half-time. Palace’s deputy goalkeeper, Walter Benitez, was in outstanding form, producing several fine saves to keep the scoreline goalless at the interval.

The breakthrough came just ten minutes from the end. Riccardo Calafiori headed down Bukayo Saka’s corner, and amidst the scramble, William Saliba attempted a shot that deflected off Maxence Lacroix and into his own net, giving the Gunners the lead.

Palace responded dramatically in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Jefferson Lerma nodded the ball down from a corner, and Marc Guehi reached it first, slotting it between the legs of Kepa Arrizabalaga. Remarkably, this was Palace’s first shot on target.

The ensuing penalty shoot-out extended to 15 successful spot-kicks before Lacroix was again unfortunate, allowing Kepa to dive to his right and seal Arsenal’s passage to the semi-finals.

Reflecting on the match, Arteta said:

“Considering the number of changes we made, the energy and quality we showed against a well-organised team that concedes few chances, we generated a lot. The margin should have been much bigger. They weren’t, and when that happens, teams have the quality to hurt you on a set-piece. That was emotionally tough to accept, but we stayed calm, showed great composure and quality in the shoot-out.”

Arsenal’s goalkeeper Kepa had a pivotal role, saving efforts from Noni Madueke, Gabriel Jesus, and Eberechi Eze in the first half, and then denying substitute Declan Rice with virtually the last kick of regular time.

Arsenal’s run of form continues with four consecutive wins, including Saturday’s Premier League victory at Everton, which restored their two-point lead at the summit. Arteta praised his squad:

“You have to win in different situations and contexts. We had two very difficult games which we managed to win. A credit to the boys that every three days they are performing at the level that they do.”

Meanwhile, Palace manager Oliver Glasner confirmed defender Chris Richards suffered a foot injury requiring stitches and is a doubt for upcoming fixtures.
