Arson Destroys BNP Ward Office in Bagerhat

A ward office of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Bagerhat has been completely destroyed by fire in what local leaders describe as a deliberate act of arson.

The incident occurred on the night of Friday, 20 February, at the 1st Ward BNP office in Sonatala village, Southkhali Union, Shyamnagar upazila. Residents reported seeing flames erupt inside the office and attempted to extinguish the fire, but strong winds caused the blaze to spread rapidly.

According to Shahidul Islam Liton, President of Southkhali Union BNP, all essential furniture, party banners and festoons, and important documents were entirely consumed by the fire. “The fire broke out suddenly at night, and despite the immediate efforts of locals, nothing could be saved,” he said.

Police from Shyamnagar Police Station arrived at the scene the same night to inspect the damage and collect evidence. OC Md. Shaminul Haque confirmed that the fire is being investigated seriously and that legal action will follow if a formal complaint is filed by the victims.

Liton condemned the arson, accusing perpetrators of attempting to destabilise the political environment in the area. He urged authorities to identify those responsible and deliver exemplary punishment to deter similar acts in the future.
