Renowned singer and stalwart of Bangladesh’s music scene, Asif Akbar, who once dominated the nation’s airwaves with hit after hit, has once again found himself in the spotlight. This time, however, it is not his music but his reflections on the country’s political landscape that have sparked widespread discussion.
On Tuesday, 10 February, Akbar took to Facebook to share his thoughts on the upcoming parliamentary election, marking a significant moment for the nation after seventeen years. In his post, he highlighted the scale and importance of the event: nearly 127.8 million eligible voters across the country will cast their ballots to select representatives for the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament). He also noted that all responsible state agencies would be actively involved at polling centres to ensure order and security.
Akbar stressed that all political parties and candidates are calling for a free, fair, and impartial election. He confirmed that the Election Commission has completed all necessary preparations, despite widespread concerns over propaganda, allegations, counter-allegations, and rumours. The election, scheduled for 12 February 2026, he said, holds profound significance for Bangladesh’s democratic future.
Quoting the historic July Revolution, Akbar urged citizens to visit polling stations and exercise their civic duty by voting for their preferred candidates. “Now is the time to demonstrate the power of the people through the vote. Avoid complacency or negligence—please come to the polling stations,” he wrote. He also encouraged inclusivity, calling on all citizens, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or geography, to participate in a festive atmosphere and contribute to the vision of building a new Bangladesh.
The singer concluded his message with heartfelt wishes for the election’s success: “May the 13th National Parliamentary Election of 2026 be successful and meaningful. Endless love to all.”
Meanwhile, the capital and cities across the country are already imbued with a celebratory atmosphere in anticipation of the vote. Campaigning has concluded, and citizens now await the moment to exercise their democratic rights. The festival-like mood leading up to 12 February reflects the nation’s readiness to engage in this democratic celebration.
