Asif Nazrul Slams ‘Bizarre’ ICC Security Warning

Published: 13 Jan 2026, 03:17 am

The landscape of international cricket has been jolted by an extraordinary diplomatic and security row involving the International Cricket Council (ICC), the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), and the host nation, India. In a recent communiqué from the ICC’s security department, the governing body reportedly warned that Bangladesh’s participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup in India is fraught with "elevated security risks," specifically tied to the inclusion of star pacer Mustafizur Rahman.

The "Bizarre" Security Directives

During a press conference held at the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) building today, the Youth and Sports Adviser, Professor Asif Nazrul, revealed the contents of the ICC’s security assessment. The letter outlines three specific conditions that would purportedly exacerbate the risk to the Bangladeshi contingent:

The Selection of Mustafizur Rahman: The ICC noted that including the left-arm seamer in the squad would significantly heighten the team's security profile.

Supporter Attire: A recommendation that Bangladeshi fans refrain from wearing the national team jersey while travelling within India.

Domestic Political Climate: The assertion that as Bangladesh’s national elections approach, the risk to the team abroad increases proportionately.

Adviser Nazrul categorically rejected these points, labelling them "bizarre" and "illogical." He questioned how a global sporting body could suggest a nation omit its premier bowler or dictate the wardrobe of its supporters to accommodate regional hostility.

Security Risk Factors Cited by the ICC

Risk FactorICC Security AssessmentGovernment of Bangladesh Response
Player SelectionMustafizur Rahman poses a "security magnet" risk.Unacceptable interference in team selection.
Fan SafetyNational jerseys increase targeted harassment risks.Fans have a fundamental right to wear national colours.
Political TimingElection-related tensions may spill over.Domestic politics should not dictate sporting venues.
Proposed SolutionPlay under heightened, restrictive security.Relocate Bangladesh’s matches to a neutral venue.

Allegations of Monopoly and Communal Bias

The Sports Adviser did not mince words regarding the current social climate in India, describing it as "virulently communal" and "hostile towards Bangladeshis." He argued that the ICC’s letter essentially confirms that India is no longer a viable host for the Tigers.

"If the ICC is truly a global organisation and not merely a puppet of Indian interests, it must allow Bangladesh to play its matches in a neutral territory like Sri Lanka," Nazrul stated. "We will not bow to communal forces. If the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) cannot guarantee the safety of a single player like Mustafizur, it is definitive proof that a safe playing environment does not exist anywhere in that country."

Neutral Venue Proposals

Professor Nazrul also alluded to offers from other nations to host the tournament or Bangladesh's specific fixtures. He noted that Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have been mentioned as potential alternatives. The Adviser insisted that the principle of "cricket for all" must be upheld, and that no single nation should hold a monopoly over the sport’s international schedule.

The BCB is expected to hold an emergency meeting to decide on their next course of action, as the cricketing world watches to see if the T20 World Cup will face a significant reshuffle or a potential boycott.
