Mexico is grappling with severe flooding and landslides after intense rainfall swept across most of the country this week, leaving at least 23 people dead and dozens missing, local authorities reported on Friday.

According to Mexico’s Civil Protection authorities, 31 of the country’s 32 states experienced heavy rains. The regions hardest hit include:

Region / StateReported DeathsImpact
Hidalgo (central)16Around 1,000 homes affected
Puebla (central)511 people still unaccounted for
Veracruz (east)1 (minor)Flooding and landslides
Queretaro (central)1 (police officer)Infrastructure damage
San Luis Potosi (north-central)Not specifiedHeavy rainfall and localised flooding

The authorities noted that rainfall caused flooded streets, landslides, and power outages, with emergency services working to clear roads and restore electricity.

President Claudia Sheinbaum tweeted that the government is actively supporting affected populations, stating: “We are working to support the population, reopen roads and get the power back on.”

The military has been mobilised to assist with the distribution of emergency aid, including food, water, and medical supplies, in the most severely affected areas.

Humanitarian and Infrastructure Impact

  • Homes and property: Around 1,000 homes in Hidalgo alone have been damaged or flooded.
  • Missing persons: Eleven people remain unaccounted for in Puebla state.
  • Infrastructure: Roads blocked by landslides and power outages have hampered relief efforts.
  • Civil protection operations: Rescue teams continue to operate throughout the affected regions, with the military supporting relief and logistical operations.
