Mexico is grappling with severe flooding and landslides after intense rainfall swept across most of the country this week, leaving at least 23 people dead and dozens missing, local authorities reported on Friday.
According to Mexico’s Civil Protection authorities, 31 of the country’s 32 states experienced heavy rains. The regions hardest hit include:
| Region / State | Reported Deaths | Impact |
| Hidalgo (central) | 16 | Around 1,000 homes affected |
| Puebla (central) | 5 | 11 people still unaccounted for |
| Veracruz (east) | 1 (minor) | Flooding and landslides |
| Queretaro (central) | 1 (police officer) | Infrastructure damage |
| San Luis Potosi (north-central) | Not specified | Heavy rainfall and localised flooding |
The authorities noted that rainfall caused flooded streets, landslides, and power outages, with emergency services working to clear roads and restore electricity.
President Claudia Sheinbaum tweeted that the government is actively supporting affected populations, stating: “We are working to support the population, reopen roads and get the power back on.”
The military has been mobilised to assist with the distribution of emergency aid, including food, water, and medical supplies, in the most severely affected areas.
